For example, a Cezanne that Allen purchased in 2001 for $38.5 million sold for $137.8 million.

The Importance of Dividends
June 1, 2022
When people talk about making money in stocks, they are usually referring to capital appreciation. After all, when we hear that the Dow Jones Industrial Average or the S&P 500-stock index has set a new record, it is the prices of the shares that is being referred to. But over the years, dividends have contributed importantly to the total return of stocks. A study by Standard & Poor’s reported that since 1926, some 34% of the total return of the S&P 500 has come from dividends. In the 1940s and again in the 1970s, dividends were responsible for 50% or more of the total return!

Have you been asked to serve as trustee, perhaps for a parent’s trust? Do you plan to ask your child to be your trustee? Although such a course of action may be a natural impulse, it may not be the best approach.

Great Resignation or Great Opportunity?
March 11, 2022
Christopher D. Maher
For employers in virtually every sector of the United States economy, the Big Quit is a big problem. Also known as the Great Resignation, this trend refers to the tidal wave of employees who have left their jobs, or are planning to do so in the near future. More than half (55%) of Americans in the workforce now say they are either somewhat likely or very likely to look for new employment in the next year, according to the August 2021 Job Seeker Survey by Bankrate.

Important reminders to non-itemizers
March 1, 2022
In early November the IRS reminded the 90% of taxpay- ers who do not itemize their deductions that they still have access to an above-the-line deduction for charitable gifts in 2021. The extra deduction was created by the CARES Act in 2020 and extended to the 2021 tax year by the Taxpayer Certainty and Disaster Relief Act of 2020— enacted last December. Single taxpayers are permitted a deduction of up to $300, marrieds filing jointly up to $600—for cash gifts to qualified charities [IR-2021-190].
What do the rich own?
March 1, 2022
The IRS has released a report of the 2020 federal estate tax filings. There were 3,441 estate tax returns filed that year, reporting some $122 billion in assets. However, only 1,275 of those estates were taxable, thanks largely to the unlimited marital and charitable deductions! Of the 2,166 nontaxable estates, 1,523 were less than $20 million. Many of these were likely filed to secure the Deceased Spouse’s Unused Exemption Amount, an election that may only be made on a timely file estate tax return. Net estate tax collections came to $9.3 billion.

Trust Tax Review
March 1, 2022
The release of the “Pandora Papers” has stimulated an interest at the House Ways and Means Committee in the taxation of trusts. The Pandora Papers purport to docu- ment how the wealthy have been able to hide their wealth from government authorities, sometimes using the USA as a tax haven. Interestingly, to date no Americans have been publicly identified in the Papers. There has been no allegation of a loss of revenue to the IRS.

Permanent tax-saving steps to consider at year end
December 10, 2021
Tax deferral is a good thing. Making deductible IRA contributions, delaying income, accelerating deductions—these are ways to pay less in tax now. Eventually the piper will have to be paid.
Year-end Estate Planning
December 10, 2021
Estate planning moves this year have been complicated by tax changes that were included in the Build Back Better Act, reported by the Ways and Means Committee in September. The most significant of these is the rough halving of the amount exempt from federal estate and gift tax, from the current $10 million to $5 million (plus inflation adjustments—this year the exempt amount is $11.7 million). The move was already on the books, but scheduled for 2026; the legislation would advance that drop to the first of next year.
Large IRAs are targeted
December 10, 2021
According to a report in ProPublica last June, the co-founder of PayPal, Peter Theil, has a Roth IRA worth some $5 billion. No details were provided on how this personal information was obtained, which was surprising given that tax and financial information has privacy protections. Reportedly Theil funded his Roth IRA with PayPal shares worth $1,700, well within the contribution limits at the time. When PayPal was sold to eBay three years later, that investment ballooned in value to $28.5 million. Those funds were used, in turn, to invest in other rising companies, such as Facebook.

Use it or lose it?
September 1, 2021
My parents are very financially secure, as my father saved several million dollars during his successful career. They are in “senior living” now. I’ve heard that federal estate taxes might be going up. Should my parents be taking estate planning steps right now? Should I? What might those steps be?
Michael Jackson's final tax bill
September 1, 2021
Imposing an estate or inheritance tax at death is not very difficult when the assets consist of cash and marketable securities. Those values are readily obtained. But when an estate includes intangible assets, the process can become very complex indeed. One of the best illustrations of this phenomenon may be the estate of Michael Jackson. The Tax Court has rendered its decision, nearly 12 years after Jackson’s death in 2009.
Estate planning for capital gains
September 1, 2021
Under current law, there is generally no income or capital gains tax on inherited assets, as their tax basis becomes fair market value on the date of the owner's death. (Note that this rule does not apply to inherited tax-favored retirement accounts.) Accordingly, estate planners may recommend holding substantially appreciated assets until death, so as to secure that tax-free basis set-up.
No taking chances
September 1, 2021
With the benefit of hindsight, we can say that the stock market collapse in the spring of 2020 was an overreaction, and in fact it was a great time for bargain hunters. But given all the uncertainties we faced about vaccine development and the economic consequences of the lockdowns, that was exactly the time when putting down a big bet on stocks may have seemed reckless and much too risky.

Businesses Must Adapt To Attract Talent Post-Pandemic
If our economy achieves the long-awaited and much-desired V-shaped recovery from the pandemic, the “V” will certainly stand for “vaccine”. As large segments of the population receive their “jabs”, many COVID-19-related restrictions are being eased across much of the country. On May 13, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that adults who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 could generally stop wearing masks indoors. And in OceanFirst’s market area, the governors of New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania eased state-mandated capacity limits and related measures in time for Memorial Day.
Estate Planning - Family Meetings
June 10, 2021

Personal Investing - Ponzi schemer
June 10, 2021
Bernie Madoff died in prison April 14, 2021. He had served about 11 years of his 150-year sentence.
Madoff was the mastermind behind the largest Ponzi scheme created to date. In a Ponzi scheme investors are promised outsized returns to attract money into a pool. Early investors are paid their returns from the contributions of the latecomers, because there are no underlying investment assets earning anything. Madoff’s genius, and one reason his scam lasted so long, is that the returns he promised were not remarkably high. Rather, they were remarkably steady, and so seemed safe to prospective investors.

Corporate Fiduciaries
June 10, 2021
Corporate fiduciaries bring experience, expertise, professionalism, and objectivity to the jobs of trusteeship and estate settlement. Continuity of service is another advantage. Although there may be employee turnover, and the banking industry has experienced a series of acquisitions and mergers, a trust division doesn’t take vacations, get sick, or move out of state. Corporate fiduciaries are regulated and bonded.

Originally Social Security benefits were treated as nontaxable income. That changed in 1983, as part of a larger plan to save the system from insolvency. On the theory that every employee had paid income taxes on his or her Social Security tax payments, but had not paid income taxes on the employer’s 50% share, one-half of Social Security benefits were made includable in income.

Estate planning angles
November 1, 2020
If you haven’t reviewed your will and estate plans for several years, this would be a good time to take a look at them. Changing family circumstances (births, deaths, divorces, retirements) are occasions for such evaluations. If major assets mentioned in the will have been sold, such as real estate or business interests, that’s another good reason to make an appointment with the estate planning advisor.
Year-end tax planning, 2020 edition
November 1, 2020
Start early this year on understanding your choices
The conventional rule of thumb for year-end tax planning has been to defer income and accelerate deductions. The 2017 tax reform hit that thinking with a one-two-three punch, doubling the standard deduction while cancelling some itemized deductions and capping the deduction for state and local taxes at $10,000. The result was that the number of taxpayers who itemize deductions fell by almost two-thirds from 2017 to 2018, according to a recent analysis. Nearly 90% of taxpayers now claim the standard deduction. See page 3 for more on this topic.
However, there are still choices that taxpayers may make, especially in the above-the-line area of the Form 1040, before they get to adjusted gross income.
“Giving while living”
November 1, 2020
Before there was The Giving Pledge established by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, there was Chuck Feeney. Both Gates and Buffett claim Feeney as the inspiration for their commitment to give half of their wealth to charity, and their drive to have all wealthy persons make a similar pledge. Feeney is a philanthropist who few have heard of, because he hates publicity.

Deferred, and not deferred
June 1, 2020
The IRS issued Notice 2020-17 in March, allowing taxpayers to defer their tax payments this year until July 15. However, the deadline for filing tax returns initially was left unchanged. That drew pushback from tax preparers, who argued that the IRS did not seem to appreciate how difficult it is at the moment for tax professionals to work with their clients.
What trusts can accomplish
June 1, 2020
The most important thing that a trust does is make financial resources available to beneficiaries when needed.
